Past -er and -ir: -ió
Regular -er and -ir verbs mark he/she past with -ió: comió, vivió. The accent is required.

Completed meal action
Use -ió for a finished eating action.
Ella comió una manzana.
She ate an apple.
Completed life event
Use -ió for a completed living action.
Él vivió en Madrid.
He lived in Madrid.
Common mix-ups
Comió needs an accent to mark stress on the last syllable; without it, comio is misspelled.
She ate yesterday.
