un introduces a new masculine noun (Tengo un libro). una introduces a new feminine noun (Tengo una casa).

Common mix-ups

Compare: Quiero comer un manzana.Use here: Quiero comer una manzana.

Manzana is feminine, so use una.

I want to eat an apple.
