Si + imparfait: hypothetical conditions

For an imagined present or future situation, use si + imparfait for the condition and the present conditional for its result.

An imagined change

Si j’avais un jardin, je planterais des tomates.

If I had a garden, I would plant tomatoes.

A possible arrangement

Nous marcherions si la pluie cessait.

We would walk if the rain stopped.

Common mix-ups

Compare: Si je serais libre, je viendrais.Use here: Si j’étais libre, je viendrais.

In this conditional pattern, the si clause needs the imperfect.

If I were free, I would come.
