Passé composé vs imparfait

Event vs background

By Fabling Editorial · How we design our guides

In French storytelling and everyday conversation, virtually every narrative relies on the dynamic interplay between two past tenses: the passé composé and the imparfait.

The secret to mastering them is visualizing a stage play: the imparfait provides the backdrop, the lighting, the weather, and the characters' habitual routines. The passé composé is the sudden arrival of an actor on stage, a phone ringing, or an event that permanently shifts the plot forward.

The Camera Lens: Snapshot vs. Continuous Flow

Passé composé captures bounded events (what happened, one-time occurrences, sequences). Imparfait describes continuous situations (what was going on, habits, states of mind).

✓Passé composé: Completed events, specific dates/times, plot milestones, interruptions
✓Imparfait: Atmospheric descriptions, feelings, weather, age, habitual routines ('used to')

Side-by-Side Reference: Passé Composé vs. Imparfait

Examples in context

Read the examples and compare their English meanings.

1. The Interrupted Action ('Quand' and 'Pendant que')

The most classic French narrative structure

When an action was already unfolding in the background (imparfait) and an unexpected punctual event occurred (passé composé), French places both side by side.

Je lisais tranquillement sur mon balcon quand le téléphone a sonné.

I was reading quietly on my balcony (imparfait) when the phone rang (passé composé).

💡 Reading was ongoing; the phone ringing was the punctual event.

Pendant que nous marchions dans la forêt, nous avons aperçu un chevreuil.

While we were walking in the forest, we spotted a deer.

💡 'Pendant que' introduces the imparfait backdrop; 'avons aperçu' is the sudden event.

2. Setting the Scene: Weather, Atmosphere, Mental States (Imparfait)

The painter's tense

Describing how someone felt, what the weather was doing, or what the scenery looked like does not advance the clock; it sets the emotional and environmental context.

Il faisait un froid glacial et la neige tombait sur les toits de Paris.

It was bitterly cold and snow was falling on the rooftops of Paris.

💡 Both weather conditions take the imparfait.

Claire avait vingt ans et rêvait de devenir musicienne.

Claire was twenty years old and dreamed of becoming a musician.

💡 Age and ongoing aspiration take the imparfait.

3. Sequential Plot Milestones (Passé Composé)

The chronological checklist

When a narrator lists a chain of actions where each event finishes before the next begins, every verb is in the passé composé.

Marc est entré dans le café, a commandé un espresso et a ouvert son carnet.

Marc entered the cafe, ordered an espresso, and opened his notebook.

💡 Three consecutive completed actions driving the narrative forward.

Common mix-ups

Compare: Mental verbs (savoir, penser, vouloir) are always in the imparfait.Use here: The passé composé can present a realization or decision as an event.

In the imparfait, 'je savais' means 'I knew (already)'. But in the passé composé, 'j'ai su' means 'I found out / learned at that instant'. J'ai voulu can describe a wish, decision, or attempt viewed as a completed event; context decides the translation.

Quand il a parlé, j'ai tout de suite su la vérité.

When he spoke, I immediately knew (learned) the truth (passé composé).

Self-Check Practice

Test your understanding

Q1.Which tense correctly completes: 'Pendant qu'elle ___ la rue, elle a laissé tomber ses clés.'?

Q2.What does 'Soudain, la porte s'est ouverte' express?

Q3.Describe an ongoing childhood routine, without presenting a completed period: 'It was sunny every morning.'

Try a reply

Say or write your answer in French before opening the example.

I was sleeping when you called. Address one friend.

Show one possible answer

Je dormais quand tu as appelé.

Other wording can work too. Compare the verb form, agreement, and word order with the lesson. Then try a sentence about your own day.
