Conditionnel passé: would have

Form the past conditional with avoir or être in the present conditional and a past participle. It can describe an unrealized past result or a regret; auxiliary choice and agreement follow the usual compound-tense rules.

A regret

J’aurais aimé visiter ce musée.

I would have liked to visit that museum.

With être

Elles seraient arrivées avant nous.

They would have arrived before us.

Common mix-ups

Compare: Elles auraient arrivées plus tôt.Use here: Elles seraient arrivées plus tôt.

Arriver takes être, so use seraient and agree arrivées with elles.

They would have arrived earlier.
