What 95% Vocabulary Coverage Means When You Read

On one page, you recognize almost every word. On the next, you keep reaching for a definition. Vocabulary coverage is one way to describe that difference.

It counts familiar words as a share of the passage. If you recognize 950 of the 1,000 words you encounter, coverage is 95%. A word used five times counts five times, so this is different from counting unique vocabulary.

One unfamiliar word in twenty

At 95% coverage, about one word in twenty is unfamiliar. At 98%, it is about one in fifty. These are arithmetic examples, not a graph of learning outcomes or a promise that a particular percentage makes reading effortless.

The unfamiliar word may carry the point of a sentence. A word you recognize may mean something different in this context. You can also know every word and still need help with how the sentence fits together.

Choose a passage you can follow

Read a short section and ask yourself what happened. If you can follow the main idea and a few explanations help you continue, the material may be a useful fit. If every sentence is a puzzle, try a simpler passage or use more support. Familiar subject matter and a translation can help you judge what is happening.

There is no need to calculate your own percentage before opening a story. Pay attention to whether you understand the message, and whether the effort feels manageable.

How Fabling uses this information

Fabling uses vocabulary estimates and difficulty feedback to guide generated stories. The target range varies with level and feedback. New learners need different support from someone returning with a larger vocabulary, and an estimate of a known word can be wrong.

You can use audio and in-context explanations while reading. Your feedback helps inform what comes next. This is a way to adapt practice, not a guarantee of comprehension or a fixed timeline for speaking confidently.

Questions

What is lexical coverage?
It is the share of words in a passage that a learner recognizes. Repeated words count each time they appear. Recognizing 950 of 1,000 running words gives 95% coverage.
Does 95% coverage guarantee understanding?
No. Familiar words can have unfamiliar meanings, and grammar, topic, context, and reading support also matter. A percentage does not measure every part of comprehension.
Does Fabling guarantee 95% familiar words?
No. Fabling uses estimated vocabulary knowledge, level, and difficulty feedback to guide story generation. Its target range varies; it does not promise one fixed percentage for every reader or story.
