Reading and Vocabulary Review: How They Work Together

A word can be clear in a story and hard to recall the next morning. Reading gives it a situation. A later review gives you another chance to remember it.
Fabling brings those activities together so you do not have to copy every useful word into a separate study system.
What scheduled review does
FSRS uses your review history to estimate when a card should appear again. Your response helps update the schedule. It handles timing; the example and the meaning still need to be useful.
FSRS is not exclusive to Fabling. Anki supports it too. Our focus is the connection between learning activities: reading, word explanations, vocabulary practice, and conversation.
Keep the sentence with the word
In a sentence about a café, a word belongs to a place and an action. That context helps explain which meaning you encountered. A review can bring the word back, and another passage can show it in a different setting.
In Fabling, repeated lookups and word explanations can bring vocabulary into review. The app schedules the practice. You can then return to reading or listening instead of managing review intervals yourself.
Remembering is part of using
Recognizing the answer on a card is different from hearing a word in a fast sentence or choosing it while speaking. Give yourself opportunities to meet it again and try it aloud. A review score cannot promise you will recall it in every situation.
Fabling uses vocabulary knowledge and difficulty feedback to inform generated stories. The aim is useful practice around what you know, with support for the parts that are new.
Try a story with word explanations, or read how the activities fit together.

Questions
- What does FSRS do?
- FSRS is a spaced-repetition scheduler. It uses review history to estimate when a card should return. Those estimates help organize practice; they are not a direct measurement of everything you know about a word.
- Is FSRS exclusive to Fabling?
- No. FSRS is an open-source scheduling approach, and Anki also supports it. Fabling's product focus is connecting reading and vocabulary practice in one place.
- Does every word need a flashcard?
- No. Familiar words often need no separate review. A review card can be useful for vocabulary you need help remembering, alongside further reading, listening, and use.
